Electronic Music

Background

With the popularity of Apple GarageBand and Audacity, amateur and aspiring musicians have a number of music recording and mixing packages that are both accessible and powerful. Further, the ease of use and speed of production allows an idea to quickly become a reality. Musicians new and expert, young and old are hearing their ideas faster and cleaner than ever!

Description

From Day 1, students will be producing songs. Each day, students will work on some aspect of song production, including choosing new instruments, arranging a song, mixing a song, changing the key and tempo, using special effects, creating loops. No musical experience necessary! The class will discuss basic song structure, using pop music's finest radio hits for examples of what to do and what not to do!. Students will also begin importing new sounds (such as voice tracks) to their compositions. The class ends with a "concert" during which students will introduce and play their tracks! Each student will receive a CD with their compositions as MP3's, as well as the native multitrack GarageBand files for further experimentation.

Equipment: One Apple iMac is reserved for each student during the course.
Ages: Teens and kids, ages 10 to 16.
