TechForum Conference

Last month I attended the TechForum conference on technology in education. It was a very enlightening day with many interesting sessions to see and people to meet. My favorite two points were the keynote speech on what education should be striving for in the 21st century, and a session on games used for education. I [...]

Interactive Fiction

Our new Interactive Fiction course developed with Books of Wonder in Manhattan is ready to go. Let’s start writing.

“I can’t imagine a more enjoyable way to launch a child into analytical and creative endeavors.”

“Winston himself has terrific programming skills, but what sets him apart is his deep interest in mentoring and in communicating his love of programming to others. He always remained calm and patient, but he quietly expected the best behavior. Very rapidly the kids rose to the occasion and could be treated as adults. By the end of the class they had recognized him as a role model as well as a teacher and friend.”

Books of Wonder

I am very excited to work with Books of Wonder to give a new course on creative writing. Starting this fall, I will be giving demonstrations and classes at Books of Wonder in Interactive Fiction. Their reading room is very comfortable, and the Cupcake Cafe is right there to feed brains hard at work creating masterpieces. Plus [...]

In New York for one Year

It’s been a year since I moved to New York and I have to say I’m really enjoying it here. Not owning a car and being able to walk everywhere is the best aspect. I walk to my favorite pizza spot, I walk to Chelsea Market for fresh fruit and vegetables, to Doma Cafe in [...]

“It’s not like school at all!”

“I want to thank you for teaching Lunar Repair Yard, the amazing two-week course in computer game programming you gave this summer. I was really impressed that you could teach such a complex and sophisticated topic to kids, and at the same time make it so compelling and fun. Daniel says, “It’s not like school at all!””

Maryland Workshop a Success

The Maryland Lunar Repair Yard course was a big success. My six students were 10 years old and I was a little concerned that they would not take well to the intensive schedule I planned – six hours a day for two weeks. In fact they were so enthusiastic that they pleaded to skip breaks and cut [...]

“I am so happy we ended up doing it!”

“[My son] loves spending time with you!” — Yael E.

Lunar Repair in Maryland

I’m doing a special course in Maryland for my friend Effie. Her son Evan loves computers so I’m preparing some fun things that I hope he will enjoy. I’ve developed a “Lunar Repair” course which is actually about video game programming. I remember when I was his age and just learning about computers. My older [...]

Happy New Year! It’s going to be a good one for us. We are excited to teach the robotics course at the American Natural History Museum here in New York. We assisted last spring, and now we will be giving the course this summer.
In the meantime, for Spring 2006 we are enrolling students for our game programming course, Video [...]
